EYESHADOW | DO'S AND DON’TS

Posted on by Kayra Magrecia

Most women just love makeup, but not everyone is really a pro. right?

Me, back in the days, when I wasn't really experienced with make-up, I found myself making way too many rookie mistakes.

Especially eyeshadow... It was like the WORST!

It was only later when I realized that this is way easier then what most women think!

Knowing that.. I was super excited when I watched one of the latest videos of Christen Dominique.

So inspired by her video, I've gathered together few quick and easy tips for you, that will change the way you apply eyeshadow forever!

DO’S AND DON’TS OF EYESHADOW

TIP 1 - Always Use A Primer

Your main goal is to make sure that we have a clear and smooth skin before applying eyeshadow.

Using a primer is the perfect foundation before applying make-up.

It helps fill in the lines and makes the skin look smoother.

It also helps the eyeshadow last longer and make it look fresh all day long.

If you don’t use any primer, oils will mix in your skin and will be difficult to do blending.

Use a beauty blender to blend your concealer in a bouncing motion.

The beauty blender's coverage looks surprisingly natural and uniform.

TIP 2 - Know Your Transition Shades

Never use a densely hard brush to apply an eyeshadow in your crease.

Do not start off with a dark shadow, this will make it look very harsh.

See how Christen dug the brush in the palette and place it on her crease. We don’t want to do that.

Do start with a transition shade that is on the same range of what you’re going with.

Using a tapered fluffy brush, glide the tip of it in a back and forth motions on your skin.

Take a little bit of the product at a time.

By doing that you will create an amazing airbrush effect.

You can use two to three eyeshadows in your palette to achieve that gradient look.

In the video, Christen started with a very light shade called Sweet Talk and uses Smitten as her next shade.

This darker shade will go right below the other shade in a very light pressure in a back and forth motion

TIP 3 - Add Dimension

Matte eyeshadows with darker shade will help us achieve dimension.

Use a small precision brush that is tapered on the end. Tap! Tap! Tap!

Make sure to tap the excess too, as we don’t want to apply too much product on our skin.

As Christen said, “slowly add the eyeshadow, don't pack on all at once.”

Use a circular motion and follow your outer crease.

See what it looks like on Christen's right eye.

TIP 4 - Use Your Blending Brush Correctly

Do not use a densely packed and dome-shaped brush.

Don't hold the brush too close to the handle as it will make it difficult for you to blend.

Instead, hold the brush towards the back of the handle.

Lightly glide it making an airbrush effect.

You want to use a fluffy brush for blending in this part.

TIP 5 - Pay Attention To Your Lower Lashline

Use a lighter color on your lower lash line.

Many women are tempted to use a darker line of shadow on their lower lash line, but that just tends to create a harsh look.

Instead, opt for a little lighter color than the one you are wearing on your upper lids.

This will “balance your eyes out” and help them look “bigger and more awake.”

We don’t want to use a fluffy brush in applying your lid color.

Use a density pack brush to place the shadow on a specified area that you want.

TIP 6 - Highlighting

Too much product and too much glittery is a No-no!

Use a matte tone color to create highlight and transition.

Check Christen Dominique explaining about the do's and don'ts if an eyeshadow!

TIP 7 - Setting Makeup

Always do your eye shadows before you set your face makeup.

That way, if there is any mess up or if you want to clean up anything, it will be easier to do than when you already apply powder and cream.

Bonus TIP - The Final Finish

Finish it up with some nice waterproof, smudge-proof eyeliner

After watching Christen’s tutorial, I think the most important thing is to practice.

Don’t be afraid to experiment, follow your own style or ask for a professional’s viewpoint on how your makeup should look.

At the very least, there is always something new you can learn or a bad habit you can change.
